New Mexico has a severe health care shortage. From increasing the number of health care providers to reducing the costs of prescription medication, I am committed to improving health care access and affordability for New Mexico families.
One of my early votes in Congress was to pass the Affordable Care Act, which increased access to everything from maternity care to lifesaving treatment for diseases like diabetes, cancer, and substance addiction. More recently, I helped pass historic investments in mental health care as part of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act and expanded protections for affordable health care coverage in the Inflation Reduction Act, which lowered premium costs even further, capped the costs of prescription drugs like insulin, and empowered Medicare Part D to negotiate directly with drug companies to lower prices for seniors.
As Chair of the Appropriations Subcommittee that oversees the Food and Drug Administration, I am also focused on ensuring Americans have access to safe medications – from cancer- and Alzheimer-treatments to contraceptives and abortion medication to addiction treatment and overdosereversal medication.
