Heinrich Encourages DACA Recipients To Continue Seeking Renewals

WASHINGTON, D.C. (June 28, 2019) – U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) is encouraging individuals protected under Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program to renew their status, and is calling for Senate action to protect DREAMers. This is in response to reports that the Supreme Court will hear oral arguments next term.

“Immigrants have long helped write the economic, social, and cultural story of New Mexico. Our nation’s foundation and the enduring American spirit were built by the hard work and dreams of so many striving young immigrants,” said Heinrich. “When President Trump made the outrageous decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, he threw hundreds of thousands of DREAMers deep into fear and uncertainty. DREAMers deserve commonsense, compassionate, and responsible policy – not the fear of deportation. I encourage DACA recipients to continue renewing their status and I urge Senate Majority Leader McConnell to bring the Dream and Protection Act to the Senate Floor for consideration.”

At the beginning of this Congress, Senator Heinrich led a group of Senate Democrats in reintroducing the Protect DREAMer Confidentiality Act of 2019, a bill to safeguard the private information—such as addresses and telephone numbers—of the young immigrants known as DREAMers to ensure they are not targeted by the Trump Administration for deportation.

Heinrich added, “The most important thing for DREAMers to know right now is that they can still apply to renew their status. If you are, or someone you know, is a DACA recipient please reach out to any of my office locations in New Mexico for options to renew your status. We are here to help.”

Senator Heinrich encourages New Mexicans to contact his office for more information and assistance. For those interested in hearing more about, or starting, DACA renewal procedures, please contact one of Senator Heinrich's five state offices in New Mexico:
