WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.), a member of the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, issued the following statement regarding the Administration’s nomination of Sally Jewell to serve as the next Secretary of the Interior, replacing current Interior Secretary Ken Salazar when he steps down in March:
“Sally Jewell’s experience as an engineer and business executive, and her work with many conservation leaders would give her a unique perspective on governing the Department of the Interior. I’m also encouraged by her thorough understanding of the nexus between outdoor recreation and the modern Western economy.
“I look forward to being involved in her confirmation process and learning more about how her qualifications and vision for this important post will protect our water, land, and wildlife, as well as honoring our commitments to our nation’s Indian tribes.”
Once Sally Jewell is formally nominated by the president, a confirmation hearing in the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources will be scheduled.
