WASHINGTON, D.C. – In a U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee hearing on U.S. Cyber Command, U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M) questioned National Security Agency Director and head of U.S. Cyber Command, Admiral Michael Rogers about Russian cyber interference techniques involving spreading disinformation and fake news.
Senator Heinrich asked Admiral Rogers about how U.S. Cyber Command is working to meet the threat against weaponized fake news and raised concerns about the capability of these techniques to disrupt U.S. and other foreign elections, as well as day to day business. He pressed Admiral Rogers on how Cyber Command can work in the future with social media companies to help minimize the impact of fake automated social media accounts and to limit Russia’s ability to amplify stories in our media that serve their interests.
