WASHINGTON—U.S. Senators Tom Udall (D-N.M.) and Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) and U.S. Representative Xochitl Torres Small (D-N.M.) announced that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has awarded $2,043,781 in Self-Help Homeownership Program (SHOP) Grants to Tierra Del Sol Housing Corporation in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
The Tierra Del Sol Housing Corporation is a regional housing community development corporation that provides affordable housing and community development to New Mexicans living in underserved and underfunded communities. These construction activities, community training, and employment opportunities aid many New Mexican communities in improving their quality of life. This grant funds the construction of housing for 112 families.
“Affordable and reliable housing is essential for New Mexicans during this pandemic to keep our families safe,” said Udall. “Every New Mexican should have access to safe and affordable housing, and this funding for Tierra Del Sol represents one more step forward in the fight for housing security for all. I will continue to work to pass comprehensive COVID relief legislation in the Senate to secure affordable housing and housing assistance for New Mexico families while preventing evictions.”
“I'm proud to support this funding to help Tierra Del Sol continue its great work of building affordable homes for southern New Mexico families,” said Heinrich. “Stable and safe housing is critical at all times, but especially when we are trying to protect everyone from the coronavirus. We have seen that New Mexicans experiencing housing insecurity and homelessness are some of the most vulnerable populations in this pandemic. The stark truth is that tens of thousands of New Mexico families are staring down real housing uncertainty in the weeks and months ahead. We must fight for even more federal support like this to provide safe, affordable housing options for families and put our state on the road toward a strong economic recovery.”
“The COVID-19 pandemic has shown that secure, safe and affordable housing is vital to our public health. Now more than ever, we need strong investments in New Mexico that ensure affordable housing is available for struggling families. I am proud that this latest grant will ultimately make newly built homes available for over 100 families so they can live healthy lives and feel safe in their communities as we continue to fight this virus together,” said Torres Small.
