ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - U. S. Senators Tom Udall (D-N.M.) and Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) will join senior Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) officials on Friday, February 13, to announce the release of an economic impact report conducted by the University of New Mexico's Bureau of Business and Economic Research. The study estimates that New Mexico's two AFRL directorates contributed enormously to the state's economy while supporting local jobs.
There are nine AFRL directorates nationwide, and two are housed at Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The Space Vehicles Directorate and Directed Energy Directorate are responsible for space research and developing energy and optical technologies.
Senator Heinrich serves on the Senate Armed Services Committee, Strategic Forces Subcommittee, which has oversight and budget responsibilities for AFRL. In the House of Representatives, he founded the first-ever Congressional Directed Energy Caucus with over 15 bipartisan members.
Senator Udall is a member of the Appropriations subcommittees for Defense and Military Construction, which set the budgets for the Air Force and military facilities.
