Udall, Heinrich Respond to First Confirmed Novel Coronavirus Cases in New Mexico

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senators Tom Udall and Martin Heinrich responded to New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham’s announcement that three individuals in New Mexico have tested positive for the 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

“The health of all New Mexico communities is our top priority in Congress. With the first confirmed cases of coronavirus in New Mexico, we want New Mexicans to know that our offices and the entire New Mexico delegation continue to be in close communication with federal, state, Tribal and local agencies and are working to ensure that our state has the resources it needs to protect public health and keep families safe. We thank Governor Lujan Grisham and New Mexico’s health officials for their work and vigilance, and continue to work hard to secure federal resources for New Mexico to combat the spread of coronavirus. Federal agencies and the Trump administration need to do more to ensure the widespread availability of testing and monitoring, to effectively and transparently communicate with state agencies and to assure the public that there is seamless coordination in the federal government’s response to COVID-19. Congress is also actively considering economic relief measures that we believe should focus on workers and small businesses that face serious financial impacts from the virus and the necessary public health response measures. We are wishing a full recovery to these patients, and we urge New Mexicans to follow the advice of trusted federal, state and local public health officials to keep themselves, their families and their communities safe.”
