ALBUQUERQUE - At 11 a.m. MT/ 1 p.m. ET, on Tuesday, August 11, U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) will host a virtual discussion with national experts in the field of outdoor education as well as local leaders in New Mexico to discuss the advantages of educating students outdoors during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond. These experts will provide recommendations and resources for education leaders looking to implement effective and innovative school reopening procedures.
Joining Senator Heinrich in the discussion will be Monica Lopez Magee, Director of Cities and Nature for the Children and Nature Network; Dylan McDowell, Deputy Director of the National Caucus of Environmental Legislators; Dave Simon, Director of Albuquerque Parks and Recreation; Luis Campos, Assistant Vice President for Facilities and Services at New Mexico State University; and Sarah Bodor, Director of Policy and Affiliate Relations at the North American Association of Environmental Educators.
“In New Mexico, thanks to our mild climate, we are uniquely suited to the possibilities of setting up more open-air, outdoor classrooms,” said Heinrich. “I'm convening this discussion to talk about some of the strategies and options for outdoor learning and open-air classrooms that schools could adopt and the health benefits that will extend beyond the pandemic.”
