WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Wednesday, December 18 at 2:30 p.m. ET/12:30 p.m. MT, U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) and U.S. Representative Xochitl Torres Small (D-N.M.) will hold a press teleconference to discuss the redesignation of White Sands to a national park.
The provision was included in the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2020, which passed the Senate on Tuesday by a vote of 86 to 8 and will soon be signed into law.
In March, Heinrich and Torres Small introduced the White Sands National Park Establishment Act, a bill to designate White Sands National Monument a national park. The White Sands National Park Establishment Act has strong support from local community leaders and elected officials in southern New Mexico.
