WASHINGTON – Yesterday, U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) convened a press conference with New Mexicans to Prevent Gun Violence, Everytown, community leaders, and students to announce the introduction of his Gas-Operated Semi-Automatic Firearms Exclusion (GOSAFE) Act, commonsense legislation designed to protect communities from gun violence — while safeguarding Americans’ constitutional right to own a firearm for legitimate self-defense, hunting, and sporting purposes.

Heinrich’s GOSAFE Act seeks to regulate firearms based on the lethality of their internal mechanisms, as opposed to focusing on cosmetic features that manufacturers can easily modify.
“Firearms have largely been associated with very positive parts of my life — from days I spent outside with my sons as they were growing up to putting food in the freezer for our family. But after the Las Vegas shooting, I began to reconcile with how to balance the legitimate use of firearms as tools to put food in the freezer—tools to protect your home—to the terrible mass shootings that we see. This led me to introduce the GOSAFE Act, which does a really good job at targeting the underlying mechanical principles that make some firearms so much more dangerous, while still protecting Americans’ right to own a firearm for legitimate self-defense, hunting, and sporting purposes,” Heinrich said in his opening remarks. “I'm grateful for all the New Mexicans who joined us who’ve been apart of this journey and who shared their differing perspectives on why we need this commonsense legislation to save lives.”
