Event will address how the U.S. meets the demands of a clean energy future, modernizes the grid, and builds transmission projects
WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Wednesday, May 15, at 8:30 a.m. ET/ 6:30 a.m. MT, U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.), a member of the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, will be a featured speaker at POLITICO’s live panel discussion, “Reinventing American Energy: Modernizing U.S. Power Infrastructure for a Clean Energy Future.”
The panel will be moderated by POLITICO energy reporter Zack Colman. Other panelists include Sue Kelly, President and CEO of the American Public Power Association, and Andrew Ott, President and CEO of PJM Interconnection.
Senator Heinrich has been a champion for building a more secure and robust 21st century energy infrastructure, which is critical to realizing the nation's true clean energy potential and creating jobs. His efforts to secure multi-year extensions of production and investment tax credits have spurred major growth in the wind and solar industries in New Mexico.
Senator Heinrich will discuss the need to integrate energy storage into the nation’s grid. Energy storage complements intermittent renewable resources--such as wind and solar--to increase full-time availability, provide backup power in case of emergencies, and help reduce the need for high-cost power during periods of peak demand. Last month, Senator Heinrich introduced the bipartisan Energy Storage Tax Incentive and Deployment Act of 2019 to establish an investment tax credit for business and home use of energy storage. Currently, there are no direct tax incentives available for energy storage.
As a member of the Senate Democrats’ Special Committee on the Climate Crisis, he’s helping to lead the effort to finally implement real solutions to eliminate carbon pollution, mitigate the devastating effects of climate change, and create a managed transition to an economy run 100 percent on clean energy.
