Heinrich To Discuss Jobs And Economic Development In Southern New Mexico

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - On Monday, April 17 and Tuesday, April 18, U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) will travel to southern New Mexico to highlight job creation opportunities in the region’s economy.

Senator Heinrich will begin his visit on Monday, April 17 in Santa Teresa, where he will meet with business leaders of the Border Industrial Association and tour CN Wire Corp., a copper wire manufacturing company that produces materials used by the automotive and aerospace industries. Senator Heinrich has been a champion of the Santa Teresa industrial corridor's growth, including securing a public-private partnership between Dell, Inc. and U.S. Customs and Border Protection to fund expanded commercial hours of operation at the Santa Teresa Port of Entry.

Senator Heinrich will then be in Columbus for the groundbreaking of the new Columbus Port of Entry (POE) in Luna County. In 2015, Senator Heinrich helped secure $85.6 million for the Columbus POE expansion to allow for more efficient trade between the United States and Mexico, accommodate the growth of commercial and commuter crossing in the region, improve border security, and create good jobs in the region.

Later that day in Las Cruces, Senator Heinrich will join Senator Tom Udall for a joint town hall meeting at the Las Cruces Convention Center.

On Tuesday, April 18, Senator Heinrich will host a roundtable discussion on meeting workforce demands in New Mexico’s growing clean energy industry with Las Cruces Mayor Ken Miyagishima, city officials, local clean energy businesses, and representatives of Doña Ana Community College, New Mexico State University, and Las Cruces Public Schools at the Munson Center. The City of Las Cruces recently completed a 280-panel solar parking structure at the Munson Center, one of many new solar projects in the community. Senator Heinrich’s efforts to secure multi-year extensions of production and investment tax credits have spurred major growth in the clean energy industry in New Mexico. The solar industry has created nearly 3,000 jobs in New Mexico, including over 1,000 new jobs in 2016 alone.
