Heinrich Welcomes Nomination Of Native New Mexican Tanya Trujillo For Assistant Secretary For Water and Science

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.), a member of the Senate Energy and Natrual Resources Committee, welcomed President Joe Biden’s nomination of Tanya Trujillo for Assistant Secretary for Water and Science at the U.S. Department of the Interior.

"In New Mexico, we know that water is life. I'm proud to see that Tanya Trujillo, a native New Mexican with extensive experience working in water policy and natural resource management at the federal, state, and regional levels, has been nominated by President Biden to lead the Department of the Interior's water and science work,” said Heinrich. “I am confident that she will bring together diverse stakeholders to build consensus and use the best available science to manage our most precious resource in the face of mounting threats posed by climate change and extended droughts. I especially look forward to working with her to address our pressing need to invest in modern water infrastructure as part of President Biden's American Jobs Plan."

Tanya Trujillo is a water lawyer with more than 20 years of experience working on complex natural resources management issues and interstate and transboundary water agreements. She most recently worked as a project director with the Colorado River Sustainability Campaign. Before then, she served as the Executive Director of the Colorado River Board of California. She has served as Senior Counsel to the U.S. Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee and as Counselor to the Assistant Secretary for Water and Science at Interior. A native New Mexican, Trujillo attended Stanford University and the University of Iowa College of Law.
