WASHINGTON, D.C. (March 10, 2016) - During a Senate Armed Services Committee nominations hearing, U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) underscored that the nation must continue to "relentlessly but also intelligently" target ISIS. The committee received testimony to consider the nominations of General Joseph L. Votel, U.S. Army, for reappointment to the grade of General and to be Commander, United States Central Command, and of Lieutenant General Raymond A. Thomas III, U.S. Army to be General and Commander, U.S. Special Operations Command.
During the hearing, Senator Heinrich highlighted the military's continued effort to dismantle ISIS by destroying its leadership, resources, finances, and infrastructure. He highlighted that the nearly 11,000 coalition air strikes to date have inflicted significant damage on ISIS's ability to expand and hold its territory in Iraq and Syria.
Senator Heinrich questioned General Votel on the kind of resources the military needs in order to continue to eliminate ISIS in a relentless and intelligent way, and stressed the importance of encouraging Arab allies to provide the ground forces in the fight against ISIS.
