WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) issued the following statement today after voting in favor of H.J. Res. 59, a short-term Continuing Resolution to fund the government from October 1, 2013 through November 15, 2013. The bill passed by a vote of 54 to 44. The Senate bill now returns to the House of Representatives for its consideration.
“Today the Senate voted to avoid a government shutdown. We passed a bill that funds the basic business of government, and the House of Representatives should do the same. Tea Party Republicans shouldn’t hold this bill hostage for the sole purpose of opening the long-settled debate over ObamaCare. A government shutdown would ripple throughout the entire economy, shake consumer confidence, delay critical services for seniors and veterans, and hurt hardworking middle-class families in New Mexico. I urge House Republicans to be responsible and work with Democrats to get this bill passed, and to send it immediately to the president.”
