Heinrich Urges House To Pass Accountable Immigration Reform

“… there is no reason we should not get this done this year.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.), a long-time proponent of accountable immigration reform and strong advocate for the DREAM Act, released the following statement today after President Obama called on the House of Representatives to take action and pass a bill to fix our broken immigration system:

“Earlier this summer, the Senate took action and passed a bipartisan immigration bill that includes a visa system that meets the needs of our economy, a tough but fair path to earned citizenship for the estimated 11 million undocumented people living in our country, a plan that ensures security at our borders, and an expedited pathway to citizenship for DREAMers.

“I share the president’s commitment to moving past the shutdown and getting things done for the American people. I urge the House of Representatives to work together to finish the job of fixing our broken immigration system.

“As the son of an immigrant, I understand how important reform is for hard-working families in New Mexico and across the country.

“When it comes to fixing our nation's immigration system, the Senate has shown that compromise and bipartisanship are possible. Despite our differences, this is an issue on which both parties can come together and find common ground.

“With bipartisan support building in Congress and a president who is eager to solve the immigration problem, there is no reason we should not get this done this year.”
