ROSWELL, N.M. – Today, Wednesday, July 7, 2021, U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) will be in eastern New Mexico highlighting how the American Rescue Plan has helped La Casa Family Health Center better serve the local community, and how legislation he introduced to achieve net-zero emissions from agriculture aligns with New Mexico State University (NMSU) Cropping Systems and Soil Management Laboratory.
At 8:30 a.m. MT, Senator Heinrich will meet with La Casa Family Health Center CEO Seferino Montaño in Roswell to discuss how funding they received from the American Rescue Plan has helped them operate safely and continue providing primary care, behavioral health, and dental care services to the community. The American Rescue Plan, which Senator Heinrich helped champion into law, has provided $4.1 million in funding to La Casa Family Health Center for renovations, HVAC replacements and filters, and accessibility improvements. The center also received funding to increase their operations to add optometry services.
At 11:15 a.m. MT, Senator Heinrich will tour NMSU’s Cropping Systems and Soil Management Laboratory in Clovis. Research at this facility is focused on healthy soils and crop management practices that improve efficiency, profitability, and soil environmental quality of dryland and limited-irrigation cropping systems. Senator Heinrich recently introduced the Agriculture Resilience Act, sweeping legislation that empowers farmers with the tools and resources needed to improve soil health, sequester carbon, reduce emissions, enhance their resilience, and tap into new market opportunities. He is also leading an effort in the Senate to make historic, long-term investment in farmers, ranchers, and rural communities part of upcoming infrastructure and climate change legislation.
