Heinrich To Travel To Taos Area For Wildfire Safety, Heritage Area Reauthorization, Child Tax Credit, And Not Forgotten Outreach Events
TAOS, N.M. – At 9:15 a.m. MT on Wednesday, May 5, 2021, U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) will meet with Carson National Forest staff and community members participating in the Forest Mayordomo Collaborative Forest Restoration Program (CFRP) near Valdez, New Mexico. The group will highlight wildfire safety and fire protection and how the CFRP can both improve forest health and rural workforces.
At 11 a.m. MT, Senator Heinrich will meet with Santa Fe County Commissioner Anna Hansen at the Northern Rio Grande National Heritage Area (NRGNHA). Senator Heinrich and Commissioner Hansen will discuss the importance of legislation that the senator recently introduced to reauthorize the NRGNHA and continue the conservation of local cultural and historic resources through 2036.
At 1:15 p.m. MT, Senator Heinrich will convene a roundtable discussion with members from the Paso a Paso Network to discuss the Child Tax Credit expansion that Senator Heinrich helped secure in the American Rescue Plan, and taking a two-generation approach to lifting families out of poverty. They will also discuss the American Families Plan, an investment in our kids, our families, and our economic future.
At 2 p.m. MT, Senator Heinrich will visit Not Forgotten Outreach (NFO) to learn more about their partnership with the University of New Mexico Taos (UNM-TAOS) and UNM-TAOSHIVE to create the Rebuilding an Agricultural Rural Economy (RARE) workforce training certificate program. This program recruits from underserved and veteran populations.
NFO is a local organization dedicated to motivating veterans and their families to participate in recreational and farming activities in order to facilitate the transition from active duty to civilian life.
Senator Heinrich recently introduced the Agriculture Resilience Act. This sweeping legislation sets a roadmap to achieve net-zero emissions from agriculture by 2040 and empowers farmers with the tools and resources needed to improve soil health, sequester carbon, reduce emissions, enhance their resilience, and tap into new market opportunities. As the Chair of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee that oversees Veterans Affairs funding and as a member of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, Senator Heinrich is committed to fighting for veterans and New Mexico’s farmers and ranchers.
