WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) will travel to McKinley County on Friday, June 5 to speak at the grand opening of the new Gallup VA Community Based Outpatient Clinic, visit the Care 66 Hooghan Hozho Housing Project, and tour the Navajo Technical University.
Senator Heinrich will start the day in Gallup where he will be joined by U.S. Representative Ben Ray Luján at the grand opening of the VA Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC) and deliver remarks. The new CBOC will provide primary and mental health services and offer more advanced telecommunications tools to improve veteran care. In 2013, Senator Heinrich and Representative Luján met with then VA Undersecretary for Health Robert Petzel, and received assurance that the VA would address chronic infrastructure problems at New Mexico's clinics. The Gallup CBOC is the third new clinic to open since that meeting.
Later in the day, Senator Heinrich will tour to the Care 66 Hooghan Hozho Housing site to get a sneak peek of its latest 44 unit, multi-family, mixed-income housing project set to open in July. Care 66 is a nonprofit Community Housing Development Organization working to provide affordable housing in Gallup and end homelessness. The project is partly funded through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Finally, Senator Heinrich will travel to Crownpoint and highlight Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) education opportunities at the Navajo Technical University (NTU). The university offers a broad range of certificate and degree programs designed to prepare students for careers in the STEM fields.
