Heinrich To Tout Economic Bright Spots In Torrance County and Santa Fe

Will highlight state’s growing clean energy industry at celebration of large wind farm in Torrance County and biotechnology startups at Santa Fe Community College’s new Commercialization Center

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) will be in Moriarty and Santa Fe on Monday, October 17, to highlight two new sectors with potential for significant job growth that could lead to a more diverse and prosperous New Mexico economy.

On Monday morning, Senator Heinrich will participate in a celebration of El Cabo Wind Farm Project at the Estancia Valley Economic Development Association in Moriarty. El Cabo will be one of the largest wind energy projects ever built in New Mexico. The project is already bringing millions of dollars into Torrance County and will provide good-paying jobs and benefits for local landowners and PNM rate users. Senator Heinrich has been a leading proponent of New Mexico's growing renewable energy industry. Last year, he secured a multi-year extension of wind and solar production and investment tax credits that encourage investors to commence major projects like El Cabo.

In the afternoon, Senator Heinrich will attend the ribbon-cutting for Santa Fe Community College’s (SFCC) Commercialization Center. The new center is home to two startup biotechnology companies, NTXBIO and Rio Grande Neurosciences, that moved onto SFCC’s campus at no cost in exchange for lecturing, student mentoring, and eventually hiring students as part-time employees. Both companies are examples of the entrepreneurship and private sector job growth that can come from commercializing technologies developed at New Mexico’s national laboratories and research universities.
