Heinrich To Tour Carlsbad Environmental Monitoring & Research Center

CARLSBAD, N.M. - U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) will tour the Carlsbad Environmental Monitoring & Research Center (CEMRC), a division of the College of Engineering at New Mexico State University, on Tuesday, April 30, 2013. CEMRC Director Russell Hardy and scientific group leaders will give Sen. Heinrich an overview of the radiochemistry facility, which includes environmental and general radiochemistry laboratories, a special plutonium-uranium lab, mobile laboratories, and a computing operations center.   

CEMRC provides support to the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP), Los Alamos National Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratories, and Washington TRU Solutions, through site and environmental monitoring. The facility measures the quality of the air, water, soil, and river sediments in the area in order to keep workers and the local community safe.

Sen. Heinrich, a member of the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, is a strong advocate for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education and is the only engineer in the senate.
