SANTA FE, N.M. - U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) will deliver remarks during a Memorial Day ceremony at the Santa Fe National Cemetery on Monday, May 30.
At the ceremony, Senator Heinrich will honor our nation's fallen heroes, veterans, and military families, and underscore New Mexico's proud tradition of answering the call of duty.
Senator Heinrich is committed to ensuring our nation keeps its promises to our men and women in uniform and their families. He's led the effort to reduce the disability claims backlog, collaborating with U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to work with community-based outpatient clinics across New Mexico to ensure their needs continue to be met. Senator Heinrich voted to create the Veterans Choice Program in 2014, which allows veterans to utilize other medical facilities if timely VA care isn't available. Senator Heinrich also recently cosponsored the Veterans First Act to significantly improve accountability at the VA and make sweeping enhancements to veterans' benefits and services.
Currently, the state only has two veterans cemeteries located in Santa Fe and at Fort Bayard. Last year, Senator Heinrich helped secure $5.7 million to build a new veterans cemetery near Fort Stanton.
