ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – On Tuesday, April 3, 2018, U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) will be in Albuquerque to present a Navajo Code Talker Congressional Silver Medal, and highlight his efforts on increasing opportunities for small businesses and improving public safety.
At 9:30 a.m., Senator Heinrich will present a Congressional Silver Medal in a historic ceremony to the family of the late Navajo Code Talker Adolph Nagurski, who earned the medal for his service but never received it. In 2000, medals were authorized by Congress and produced by the U.S. Mint to recognize the Navajo Code Talker's immense contribution to winning the war against Japan. Senator Heinrich worked to authorize the approval of releasing the prestigious medal and will posthumously present it to Mr. Nagurski's family at the New Mexico Veterans' Memorial.
At 1:30 p.m., Senator Heinrich will host a roundtable at the Albuquerque Hispano Chamber of Commerce with local small businesses and Sandia National Laboratories. Sandia recently announced that for the first time, they will offer a 5 percent pricing preference for qualified companies, providing New Mexico small businesses with additional opportunities to compete and grow. Senator Heinrich has been a leading proponent of increasing New Mexico small business contracts with Sandia National Laboratories, Los Alamos National Laboratory, and the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP).
Later that afternoon at 5 p.m., Senator Heinrich and Mayor Tim Keller will host a Public Safety & Consumer Protection Fair at the Manzano Mesa Multigenerational Center in Albuquerque. This event is part of their ongoing efforts to promote public safety and consumer protection in New Mexico. Over a dozen federal, state, and local agencies and organizations will be on hand with information about the services they provide and resources for New Mexicans. The fair is free and open to the public, and all are encouraged to attend.
