Heinrich To Open Outdoor Economics Conference In Silver City

SILVER CITY, N.M. – Tomorrow, Thursday, October 3, 2019, at 8:30 a.m. MT, in Silver City, U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) will deliver opening remarks at the New Mexico Outdoor Economics Conference. The event is designed to highlight successful community economic development efforts in New Mexico and across the country that are connected to public lands and develop policies and local entrepreneurship opportunities. The outdoor recreation economy directly contributes $9.9 billion in consumer spending annually and employs 99,000 people in New Mexico.

An avid sportsman and conservationist, Senator Heinrich is a member of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee and serves as the co-chair of the bipartisan Outdoor Recreation Caucus and the Congressional Sportsmen's Caucus. He serves as a member of the Migratory Bird Conservation Commission, where he helps approve grants to restore and conserve essential wildlife habitat.

Senator Heinrich has long worked to protect New Mexico's public lands, watersheds, and wildlife for future generations. He is a champion for the outdoor recreation industry, which is a major economic driver in New Mexico, particularly in rural communities. Senator Heinrich is working to pass legislation to upgrade Bandelier and White Sands National Monuments into new national parks. In May, Senator Heinrich introduced the bipartisan Simplifying Outdoor Access for Recreation (SOAR) Act to improve the permitting process for outfitters, educational organizations, and community groups to conduct activities on public lands.
