Heinrich To Join Taos Community In Local Service Projects

SANTA FE, N.M. - U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) will travel to Taos on Saturday, December 5, to tour the Military Family Respite Center with AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) members and join volunteers in preparing food baskets for the Taos Feeds Taos annual service project.

On Saturday afternoon, Senator Heinrich will tour the Taos Military Family Respite Center and meet with an AmeriCorps NCCC team that is currently working on remodeling the facility. The center is owned and managed by Not Forgotten Outreach Inc., a local organization dedicated to motivating veterans and their families to participate in recreational activities in order to facilitate the transition from active duty to civilian life. The Military Family Respite Center connects veterans to job opportunities, helps them access benefits, and provides peer counseling and mentorship opportunities. Senator Heinrich is the first AmeriCorps alum to serve in the United States Senate and a member of the National Service Congressional Caucus.

Later on Saturday, Senator Heinrich will join Taos Feeds Taos volunteers to help prepare food baskets for needy families this holiday season. Volunteers will pick up non-perishable foods from the Taos Mesa Brewery--the facility hosting this year's Eighth Annual Food Drive and Benefit Show--and deliver them to the Taos U.S. Army National Guard Armory, where the baskets will be sorted and prepared for distribution to 1,100 families. This year marks Taos Feeds Taos' 30th anniversary. Beginning December 17 and 18, baskets will be distributed in Taos, Peñasco, Questa, and Amalia.
