WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) will travel to Chaves and Bernalillo Counties beginning tomorrow, Friday, July 18, to host an innovation, technology, and job creation tour.
Early Friday morning, Senator Heinrich will tour the Southwestern Native Aquatic and Recovery Center in Dexter and meet with staff to discuss the facility's ongoing projects and research to protect endangered species in New Mexico. The facility provides research and expertise on more than 20 different species for fish facilities in New Mexico, Arizona, Texas, and Oklahoma. The center has addressed regional priorities related to threatened and endangered species for almost 50 years
Later in the morning, Senator Heinrich will tour Haley Farms, a family-owned small business, in Roswell to discuss how renewable energy programs can help New Mexico's agriculture industry. The facility uses a solar photovoltaic system to operate a 260-acre pecan farm. The solar array includes 1,518 solar panels on a 2.75-acre area. As a member of the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, Senator Heinrich is a lead proponent in growing New Mexico's clean energy economy.
On Friday afternoon, Senator Heinrich will meet with students from Roswell's Job Corps center to discuss expanding employment opportunities for young adults in the region. Job Corps is a no-cost education, career, technical training program administered by the U.S. Department of Labor that helps young people ages 16 through 24 improve the quality of their lives through career, technical, and academic training. Senator Heinrich's Roswell office hosts "shadow days" for Job Corp members to spend a day with a staff member in an effort to provide them with the insight of how a government office operates. Senator Heinrich is a member of the National Service Congressional Caucus and the only sitting senator to have served in AmeriCorps.
Later in the afternoon, Senator Heinrich will tour the International Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA) in Roswell for a briefing of the academy's current program and recruitment efforts. The center provides high-quality training, technical assistance, supports institution building, enforcement capability, and fosters relationships of American law enforcement agencies around the world. The center is administered by a consortium of universities and private industries under a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Department of State. Courses have been designed by and are taught by academicians for foreign law enforcement officials.
On Saturday, Senator Heinrich will host a roundtable discussion in Albuquerque on raising the minimum wage with community leaders from across New Mexico and minimum wage workers. Senator Heinrich is a cosponsor of S. 1737, the Minimum Wage Fairness Act, which would raise the hourly federal minimum wage from $7.25 to $10.10 by 2015.
Later in the afternoon, Senator Heinrich will tour the Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies (CINT) Core Facility in Albuquerque to discuss technology and job creation. CINT is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) user facility jointly managed by Sandia and Los Alamos national laboratories. CINT has more than 120 laboratory employees working in its Core Facility at Sandia and its Gateway Facility in Los Alamos, in addition to more than 450 visitors annually working in both facilities.
DOE user facilities like CINT provide universities and businesses access to world-class research capabilities. Senator Heinrich will hear from a local business that has used CINT facilities to synthesize nanoparticles that will help detect tumors in cancer patients a year-and-a-half earlier than previously possible. As the only engineer in the Senate, Senator Heinrich is a lead advocate for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) education and expanding employment opportunity in the tech field. Special RSVP instructions for CINT tour are below.
