Heinrich To Discuss Jobs And Workforce Development In Valencia County, Will Speak At F-16 Taco Display Ceremony In Albuquerque
WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) will travel to Valencia County and Albuquerque on Wednesday, November 5, 2014, to discuss job creation, workforce development, and speak at the F-16 Taco display dedication ceremony.
Early Wednesday afternoon, Senator Heinrich will tour the Valencia Flour Mill in Belen, to discuss economic development. The mill is a family-owned small business that just celebrated its 100th anniversary. The senator will discuss how important small businesses are to job creation and the local economy. Valencia Flour Mill specializes in producing sopapilla, blue corn pancake, and muffin mixes, which are distributed throughout New Mexico.
Later in the afternoon, Senator Heinrich will discuss workforce development at the University of New Mexico's (UNM) Valencia Campus in Los Lunas. UNM Valencia was one of the 11 community colleges in New Mexico to receive federal funding for innovative training programs to help adults advance into high-wage careers. The funding, provided by the U.S Department of Labor Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training competitive grant program, allows UNM Valencia to expand and improve education and career training programs to help job seekers learn the skills they need for New Mexico's tech and health care industry. Senator Heinrich is a proponent of increasing funding for job-driven training and higher education.
In the evening, the senator will speak at the dedication of the F-16 Taco display at The National Museum of Nuclear Science & History in Albuquerque. An aircraft featuring the Fighting Tacos logo -- on the tail insignia and trim -- will be on display outdoors. Many retired New Mexico Air National Guard service members volunteered to get this display completed in the past year. As a member of the House of Representatives in 2009, then-Representative Martin Heinrich introduced a proposal as part of the National Defense Authorization Act to save more than a thousand Taco jobs at Kirtland Air Force Base. As a member of the House Armed Services Committee, Heinrich led an effort to ensure that the Air Force could not retire any legacy fighter aircraft across the country without identifying new missions for their respective bases. In Albuquerque, this was realized in 2010 through combining the 150th Fighter Wing with the 58th Special Operations Wing, and establishing three new missions.
