ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.), a member of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, will deliver the keynote address at the University of New Mexico National Security Studies Program spring symposium on Friday, April 11, 2014 at 10 a.m. Senator Heinrich’s speech will focus on balancing civil liberties with national security in a digital age.
Recent revelations and declassified documents have made public the extent of the Intelligence Community's bulk phone and now-defunct email metadata collection programs and their effect on the constitutional liberties of law-abiding Americans. Senator Heinrich has repeatedly pressed President Obama and the Intelligence Community on the effectiveness of these programs. He is an original cosponsor of the USA FREEDOM Act, which would end the National Security Agency’s (N.S.A.) bulk collection of Americans' phone and other communications records under Section 215 of the USA PATRIOT Act and ensure that other authorities cannot be used to justify similar widespread collection.
