Heinrich To Continue N.M. Food Tour At De Smet Dairy; Hear From Geology And Hydrogeology Experts at New Mexico Tech

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – TODAY, Tuesday, October 1, 2019, U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) will deliver opening remarks at “Celebrating Culture: Workshops Supporting New Mexico Arts and Culture,” at the Albuquerque Museum. He will then tour De Smet Dairy in Bosque Farms as part of his ongoing New Mexico Local Food Tour. Later today, Senator Heinrich will tour the New Mexico Bureau of Geology & Mineral Resources, a non-regulatory state agency and a division of New Mexico Tech in Socorro.

At 10 a.m. MT, Senator Heinrich will deliver opening remarks at the Albuquerque Museum to kick-off the second of two workshops he is cohosting this week, “Celebrating Culture: Workshops Supporting New Mexico Arts and Culture.” The events are designed to connect art organizations and artists with federal, local, and private resources the Albuquerque Museum. 

At 11 a.m. MT, Senator Heinrich will tour De Smet Dairy, New Mexico’s only Grade A dairy farm and bottling facility for raw milk and pasteurized, non-homogenized milk and yogurt. The Senator will explore the family history behind the dairy and how their dairy cows are free grazing and grass-fed year-round, in addition to being free of hormones, antibiotics, and GMOs. The visit is part of Senator Heinrich's ongoing New Mexico Local Food Tour to highlight the success and variety of farms and food-related businesses across the state. He will be visiting farms, dairies, restaurants, farmers markets, community kitchens, wineries, and other kinds of local food enterprises along the way. To follow along, use the hashtag #NMFoodTour.

At 2:45 p.m. MT, Senator Heinrich will tour the New Mexico Bureau of Geology & Mineral Resources, a non-regulatory state agency and a division of New Mexico Tech. The Senator will also visit the Mineral Museum and hear from Hydrogeology Program Manager Stacy Timmons. Timmons, recently named to the Interstate Stream Commission by Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, is a leading expert on mapping aquifers in New Mexico and issues surrounding the Plains of San Augustin.
