ROSWELL, N.M. - U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) will commemorate Veterans Day in Chaves and Lincoln Counties on Wednesday, November 11.
In the morning, Senator Heinrich will join veterans and military families in Roswell for the annual New Mexico Military Institute (NMMI) Veterans Day Breakfast on campus at the Bates Dining Hall. Senator Heinrich will deliver remarks honoring our nation's servicemembers and veterans. More than 100 veterans are expected to attend, along with local leaders and special guests. NMMI grants high school diplomas and Associate of Arts and Associate of Science degrees.
Later in the morning, Senator Heinrich will join the Lincoln County community to celebrate the groundbreaking of the Fort Stanton State Veterans' Cemetery. The event will include remarks from Senator Heinrich and state and local officials. Last month Senator Heinrich and Senator Tom Udall (D-N.M.) announced that they secured $5,741,388 to cover the full cost of construction for a veterans cemetery near Fort Stanton. Currently, the state has only two veterans cemeteries-located in Santa Fe and at Fort Bayard-and many veterans and their families have to travel a great distance to honor loved ones. The new cemetery at Fort Stanton will serve more than 7,500 veterans and their families.
In the afternoon, Senator Heinrich will tour El Charro Tortilla Factory, a veteran-owned business in Roswell. Senator Heinrich will discuss ways to support veteran-owned bussinesses and be briefed by the owner about the challenges veterans and servicemembers who own small businesses face when they are are deployed for duty. Senator Heinrich will also be joined by students from Sunset Elementary School.
Media are welcome to attend all events.
