ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) will be in Rio Rancho on Monday, July 4, to celebrate Independence Day at the Rio Rancho Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 5890 open house and host a flag ceremony to honor our nation's servicemembers and their families.
Senator Heinrich will meet with local veterans and military families and to present the VFW Post 5890 with a flag that was flown over the U.S. Capitol.
In 2014, Senator Heinrich voted to create the Veterans Choice Program to ensure all veterans, especially those in rural Western states, have access to care. The program allows veterans to utilize other medical facilities if timely VA care isn't available or if the veteran lives more than 40 miles from a VA facility. Senator Heinrich is also a cosponsor of the Veterans First Act to significantly improve accountability at the VA and make sweeping enhancements to veterans' benefits and services.
Senator Heinrich has worked to assist veterans across the state access the care and benefits they have earned. In March, Senator Heinrich met with local veterans at the VFW in Tucumcari and held a follow up event to bring local health care providers and rural veterans together to learn more about the Veterans Choice Program.
