WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.), a member of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence and the Senate Armed Services Committee, released the following statement on President Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), known as the Iran deal:
“The President just handed religious extremists in Iran’s government a major victory. Leaving the Iran deal, green lights the country’s nuclear program, jeopardizes our credibility, and threatens our nation's security. It also exposes our allies and weakens our ability to forge future multilateral agreements.
“The Trump Administration needs to realize that nuclear weapons are far too dangerous for political games. Their reasoning is as thin as repeated campaign talking points and applause lines his conservative base loves to hear.
“Since signing the agreement, all of Iran's potential pathways to obtaining nuclear weapons were blocked, but President Trump just opened the flood gates. His impulsive move today isolates the United States, escalates tensions, and leaves us without a plan B regarding Iran’s nuclear program.”
