Heinrich Statement On Trump Supreme Court Nomination
With Trump's nomination of Amy Coney Barrett, access to affordable health care, women's rights, LGBTQ rights, workers' rights, voting rights, civil rights, addressing climate change, and more are all at risk
WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) issued the following statement in response to the nomination of Amy Coney Barrett by President Donald Trump to fill the Supreme Court vacancy left by the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg:
“The only Supreme Court nominee the Senate should consider is one chosen by our next president. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell set the precedent for this very situation when he blocked Judge Merrick Garland’s nomination for 293 days during the 2016 election.
“Moving forward right now with Amy Coney Barrett isn’t fair to the American people, to the foundation of our democracy, or even to the nominee.
“Whoever fills Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s seat on the Supreme Court will have an enormous impact on all of our lives. A majority-conservative Supreme Court risks everything New Mexico values. It places an immediate risk to access to affordable health care, women’s rights, LGBTQ rights, workers’ rights, voting rights, civil rights, addressing climate change, and so much else.
"Majority Leader McConnell and Senate Republican’s rush to confirm President Trump's nominee shows just how out of touch their priorities are. Millions of Americans are struggling to make ends meet and protect their health in the midst of the pandemic. After refusing for months to earnestly negotiate urgent relief measures, Senate Republicans are now ready to move heaven and earth to ram through this Supreme Court pick.
"Once again, history is calling on Senate Republicans to put our country and the integrity of our democratic institutions before their political agenda. And once again, they are putting their duty to Americans last.”
