WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) issued the following statement on President-elect Donald Trump nominating U.S. Representative Cathy McMorris Rodgers (WA-5) to be the Department of the Interior Secretary. Senator Heinrich is a member of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee that will vet the nominee.
"I look forward to meeting with Representative McMorris Rodgers and hearing more about her positions on safeguarding America's public lands, addressing climate change, promoting outdoor recreation, and protecting tribal patrimony and sacred sites. However, I have concerns with her history of support for auctioning off Western public lands--including more than 1250 square-miles in New Mexico--and allowing for the destruction of a site sacred to Apache nations across the southwest."
