WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) issued the following statement after President Trump signed executive actions to revive the Dakota Access and Keystone XL Pipelines:
"President Trump has shown a blatant disregard for tribal sovereignty and responsible energy development. The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and tribes standing in solidarity with them worked tirelessly to halt the Dakota Access pipeline to protect their water and historic sacred sites. And by approving the Keystone pipeline--a foreign tar sands project--President Trump is doubling down on one of the world's dirtiest energy sources.
"When making decisions about energy development and the siting of pipelines, the administration must establish better tribal consultation and take environmental risk analysis seriously. This executive order moves us backward and threatens essential protections that keep our air and water safe for future generations."
