WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) released the following statement today after voting against the Senate Republican budget resolution for fiscal year 2016. The resolution (S. Con. Res. 11) was passed by a vote of 52 to 46.
"The Republican budget does not align with New Mexico priorities. We aren't going to grow our middle class by slashing funding for early childhood education and Pell Grants for college students, or by prioritizing tax breaks for millionaires over preserving Medicare, or by selling off our treasured public lands.
"Instead, we should be focused on propelling our economic recovery forward by investing in our country again. We need to level the playing field for hard-working families, increase access to education and job training, close tax loopholes for powerful special interests, and make key investments in innovation and infrastructure to create jobs."
