Heinrich Statement On Paycheck Fairness

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) released the following statement today after the Paycheck Fairness Act, a proposal to combat wage discrimination on the basis of gender, failed to clear a procedural hurdle. 

"Preventing working women in New Mexico from earning equal pay for equal work is unacceptable -- especially in a time when women are often the primary or joint breadwinners for their families. The gender wage gap halts the progress of our economy, forces women to make ends meet with less, and undermines the notion that everyone deserves an honest day's pay for a full day's work. It's time to give New Mexico working families a fair shot to get ahead -- passing the Paycheck Fairness Act is a way to make that happen."

Senator Heinrich, a cosponsor of the Paycheck Fairness Act, voted to advance the bill, which failed a procedural vote of 52 to 40.
