WASHINGTON, D.C. (Feb. 28, 2019) - U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.), a member of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence and the Senate Armed Services Committee, issued the following statement on President Trump’s summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Hanoi:
“I always welcome diplomacy to lower tensions on the Korean Peninsula, but going in without a plan continues to give the notoriously untrustworthy North Korean dictator the international legitimacy he has always craved. President Trump must reaffirm our alliances in the region, and remain committed to strong sanctions so long as North Korea maintains its nuclear facilities and dismal human rights record, including the detaining, torturing, and killing of a U.S. citizen.”
