WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) issued the following statement in response to today’s deadly attacks in Kabul, Afghanistan:
“Today’s attacks caused a devastating loss of American and Afghan lives. They also make clear the dangerous conditions that U.S. service members are operating under to assist in the evacuation efforts. My thoughts are with the family members of those killed today and with the many injured.
“I am grateful to all the service members and diplomatic personnel working tirelessly to evacuate their fellow Americans, Afghans who aided in the effort to defeat Al-Qaeda and the Taliban over the last 20 years, and other Afghans who risked their lives to teach girls, promote democracy, and bring stability to their country. Through this quickly evolving situation, I remain committed to doing all I can to assist their continued evacuation efforts.
"My office has been working day and night with individuals on the ground to help evacuate those seeking refuge. I encourage any New Mexicans seeking to help someone in Afghanistan to contact the State Department or my office immediately for assistance.”
Senator Heinrich continues to encourage anyone trying to evacuate Afghanistan to reach out to afg-evac@heinrich.senate.gov. New Mexico Congressional Delegation staff are working with U.S. State Department and U.S. Department of Defense authorities to help those trying to flee Afghanistan.
