Heinrich Statement On 100th Anniversary Of Senate Passage Of The 19th Amendment

WASHINGTON, D.C. (June 4, 2019) – U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) released the following statement in recognition of the 100th anniversary of the United States Senate passing the 19th Amendment, which gave all American women the constitutional right to vote: 

“Our nation’s democracy was founded on the right to vote and the ability of every citizen to participate equally. Until a century ago, however, women were excluded from that most fundamental right. On this important anniversary today, we should remember all of the suffragettes who showed unwavering determination and courage in their fight to right that wrong and provide women equal access to our democracy. They blazed a trail for generations of women to follow.

"The many contributions women in New Mexico and across the country make everyday to create a more just world for our children and all future generations inspires us all. Over the last hundred years, we have made several advances in the fight for equality, yet discrimination against women continues. The work of the suffragettes to expand freedom and opportunity in our country remains unfinished. I am steadfastly committed to push forward in our march towards full equality and for every single American to be heard at the ballot box."
