WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) released the following statement in honor of Memorial Day:
"Memorial Day is more than just a holiday weekend. It's a time where communities throughout New Mexico and across the country come together and pay tribute to the men and women who selflessly gave their lives to preserve the freedom and liberty we enjoy today.
"Our country's history is made up of stories of our brave service members volunteering to defend our country at home and abroad. They've served with extraordinary valor and courage. Words alone will never be enough to express the deep gratitude we owe them and their families -- we must do more. The ability to maintain the strongest and most dedicated military force in the world depends on our nation's ability to keep its promises. Its promise to care for the families of fallen soldiers and to provide our veterans the best care, benefits, and opportunities our country has to offer. These are promises that I will fight to ensure we keep.
"We also come together today to honor the strength and resilience of our military families. Parents who've lost a child, spouses who've lost a partner, and children who've lost a parent or a sibling. We stand in solidarity with them and acknowledge that the legacy of our fallen warriors endures and lives on in our memories and in our communities.
"I join all New Mexicans in honoring our fallen heroes and keeping those serving today in our thoughts."
