Heinrich, Smith To Participate In Virtual Press Conference With Rewiring America To Highlight Electrification Measures In Inflation Reduction Act

WASHINGTON – Tomorrow, Wednesday, August 3, at 1 p.m. ET, Electrification Caucus Co-Chairs Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) and Tina Smith (D-Minn.) will participate in an “Electric Explainer” – a virtual press conference hosted by Rewiring America that will unpack the climate provisions of the Inflation Reduction Act, as well as point a way forward for economy-wide electrification.

Senators Heinrich and Smith and leaders from Rewiring America will discuss the historic climate provisions, their impacts on lowering costs for American households and how this generational investment would transform America’s energy and climate trajectory.

Among the provisions to lower energy prices in the Inflation Reduction Act includes a new rebate program that mirrors the Zero-Emission Homes Act that would make the economic, environmental, and health benefits of electrification affordable and accessible. The legislation, introduced by Senator Heinrich and cosponsored by Senator Smith, would provide upfront, point-of-sale rebates for the purchase and installation of electric appliances and equipment in single-family homes and multifamily buildings, with additional support for low- and moderate- income households.

The latest research from Rewiring America indicates electrification provisions within the Inflation Reduction Act will enable one million low- and moderate-income households to go electric. Combined with electrification provisions offering tax rebates for American households, the Inflation Reduction Act will reduce U.S. carbon pollution 40% below 2005 levels by 2030.
