Heinrich Signals Infrastructure Opportunities For Tribal Nations In Biden’s American Jobs Plan, Highlights Historic Investments Secured In American Rescue Plan
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – In a Tuesday discussion with the All Pueblo Council of Governors (APCG) and U.S. Department of Interior Secretary Deb Haaland, U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) highlighted how President Joe Biden’s American Jobs Plan would bring much needed infrastructure investments to Tribal nations.
“The President’s American Jobs Proposal includes $5 billion for a new Rural Partnership Program to help rural regions, including Tribal Nations, build on their unique community assets for economic development,” said Heinrich. “This program will empower Tribal communities by supporting locally led planning and capacity building efforts, and providing flexible funding to meet critical needs.
Senator Heinrich is also working to fund the backlog of water and sewer projects across Tribal communities. This effort would provide funding for tens of thousands of homes in Tribal communities in the Albuquerque IHS service area alone.
Senator Heinrich recently helped secure $31 billion to help Tribal nations recover and rebuild in the American Rescue Plan. This funding is the single largest dedicated infusion of resources to Indian Country in U.S. history. The American Rescue Plan also includes new opportunities with the State Small Business Credit Initiative for Tribal Government.
Also in attendance at the event were New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, U.S. Senator Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.), U.S. Representative Teresa Leger Fernández (D-N.M.), New Mexico Department of Indian Affairs Secretary Lynn Trujillo, and APCG Chairman Wilfred Herrera, Jr.
