Heinrich Seeks Accountability For Attack At La Cieneguilla Petroglyphs During Key Hearing

WASHINGTON (Feb. 8, 2022) – Today during a full Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee hearing on pending nominations, U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.), requested an update on the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) investigation into the recent vandalism attack on sacred petroglyphs at La Cieneguilla near Santa Fe.

During the hearing, Laura Daniel-Davis, the nominee to be Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Department of Interior’s Land and Minerals Management, confirmed to Senator Heinrich that this investigation is a “top priority for the Bureau of Land Management to figure out what happened and to bring the criminals to justice.” Daniel-Davis confirmed that BLM agents and rangers are working directly with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and state and local officials.

Senator Heinrich is requesting that the BLM thoroughly investigate this crime and elevate the protection of all the cultural and historic sites on the Caja del Rio plateau.
