WASHINGTON (Oct. 21, 2021) – U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) issued the following statement after Senate Republicans blocked debate on the Freedom to Vote Act, legislation that would reduce the influence of money in politics, end the act of politicians picking and choosing the voters they want, and protect access to voting.
“I am deeply frustrated that Senate Republicans just used the filibuster to block us from beginning debate on yet another voting rights bill—the Freedom To Vote Act. But I will keep doing everything I can to find a way forward in the Senate for legislation that makes sure that every single lawful American can access the ballot,” said Heinrich. “We cannot give up on passing voting rights and election reform legislation in this congress. Not when our democracy is on the line.”
Senator Heinrich is a cosponsor of the For The People Act, which Senate Republicans blocked earlier this year. Senator Heinrich is also a cosponsor of both the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, which would restore the full protections of the original Voting Rights Act, and the Democracy For All Amendment, which would overturn Citizens United and help states rein in the out-of-control and unaccountable dark money that has poisoned our politics.
