ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Today, U.S. Senators Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) and Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.) and U.S. Representative Teresa Leger Fernández (D-N.M.) are welcoming Intel Corporation’s announcement that it will be making a $3.5 billion investment in its New Mexico manufacturing operations that is expected to create at least 700 high-tech jobs, 1,000 construction jobs, and support an additional 3,500 jobs in the state. Planning activities begin immediately, with construction expected to start later in 2021.
“I’m thrilled to welcome this historic level of new investment in Intel’s Rio Rancho Campus that will bring hundreds of new high-paying, high-tech careers to New Mexico,” said Heinrich. “This is an exciting new chapter for a facility and a local workforce in Rio Rancho that has built a decades-long track record of success in manufacturing the latest technologies. I encourage Intel to work in close coordination with our state’s community colleges and universities to connect as many New Mexicans in our homegrown high-tech workforce as possible to these exciting new career opportunities. This is a major step forward as we continue to diversify New Mexico’s economy and make our state a hot spot for manufacturing the advanced technologies and products of the future.”
“Today’s historic investment represents a long-term commitment to New Mexico that will help our state recover and rebuild from the COVID-19 pandemic. It will not only create 700 good-paying jobs to support Intel’s growing microchip manufacturing business, but also provide opportunities for construction workers, tradesmen, electricians, and local businesses,” said Luján. “This is good news for New Mexico, and I commend Intel for strengthening their presence in Rio Rancho.”
“Intel’s $3.5 billion investment in Rio Rancho is an investment in our communities, in our workforce, and in New Mexico’s future,” said Leger Fernández. “This commitment will create thousands of high-paying jobs for New Mexicans and spark manufacturing here at home. As we continue to build up our economy and focus on job creation, I will work in Congress to pass legislation to promote New Mexico’s innovation economy with the semiconductor industry powering us forward."
“Our Rio Rancho campus is an important part of Intel’s global manufacturing network and we are proud to make this investment in New Mexico. Being able to expertly construct the best products using the best technologies is a critical part of our IDM advantage that delivers enormous value for our customers. This investment will help us build on our leadership position in 3D packaging technologies,” said Keyvan Esfarjani, Intel Corporation senior vice president and general manager of Manufacturing and Operations.
The investment will be used to support Intel’s advanced semiconductor packaging technology, Foveros. This advanced 3D packaging technology enables Intel to build processors with compute tiles stacked vertically, rather than spread out flat, to achieve performance improvements in a smaller footprint.
