ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - On Thursday, July 8, 2021, in Albuquerque, U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) will hold discussions with local leaders about solutions to end child poverty and create multi-generational pathways to economic opportunities for families in New Mexico.
At 10 a.m. MT, Senator Heinrich will meet with Abriendo Puertos National Director Adrian Pedroza. Parents will share their vision of taking a two-generation approach to lift families out of poverty. Senator Heinrich has long championed two-generation policies that help parents and children reach success together. He also fought to pass the historic expansion of the Child Tax Credit in the American Rescue Plan that will cut child poverty in half. Senator Heinrich will discuss how the major investments proposed in President Biden’s American Families Plan can help New Mexico families.
At 2:15 p.m. MT, Senator Heinrich will meet with Central New Mexico (CNM) Community College’s Early Childhood Education Department. The group will discuss CNM’s innovative bilingual early childhood program that is helping diversify the early childhood education workforce, while also providing on-campus child care for parents to continue their education. CNM recently received funding that will soon allow Spanish-speaking students to take the entire program in Spanish.
