WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich—the only sitting senator to have served in AmeriCorps—joined the National Service Congressional Caucus, which works to expand service opportunities for all Americans. Created in 2004, the National Service Congressional Caucus is made up of a bipartisan group of legislators dedicated to raising awareness of national service.
"Early in my career, I spent the better part of a year doing construction, education, and fieldwork for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as an AmeriCorps volunteer. That experience taught me that there is no venture more rewarding than working to improve the lives of those around us," said Sen. Heinrich. "Service experiences yield lifelong benefits. I look forward to working with the National Service Congressional Caucus to raise awareness and expand access to enriching opportunities in New Mexico."
Earlier this month, Sen. Heinrich met with the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) CEO, Wendy Spencer. The CNCS is the federal agency that works hand in hand with local partners to foster civic engagement through service and volunteering. The agency engages more than five million Americans in services through Senior Corps, AmeriCorps, and the Social Innovation Fund.
"We're thrilled that Sen. Heinrich has joined the National Service Caucus today," said Wendy Spencer, CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service. "As an AmeriCorps alum, Sen. Heinrich understands the power of national service to change lives and improve communities because he has done it himself."
