Heinrich In San Juan County To Highlight Economic Development Opportunities, Two-Gen Approach To Early Childhood Health
FARMINGTON, N.M. – Today, May 1 and tomorrow Wednesday, May 2, U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) will be in San Juan county to highlight economic development opportunities in the outdoor recreation industry and discuss the importance of taking a two-generation approach to early childhood health and wellness.
Today in Aztec, Senator Heinrich will visit Jack’s Plastic Welding, a local small business that manufactures outdoor recreation products built from PVC coated fabrics. Jack’s inflatable rafts have been a fixture on Western rivers for three decades. During the visit, Senator Heinrich will tour the manufacturing plant and discuss the company’s plans for expansion. Jack’s Plastic Welding has worked with Sandia and Los Alamos National Labs to develop products for the space, energy, and medical industries. Senator Heinrich has championed efforts to make it easier for small businesses like Jack's Plastic Welding to engage with national laboratories to commercialize innovative technology. Senator Heinrich’s bipartisan Energy Technology Maturation Act would authorize an Energy Technology Maturation Program at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and improve the process to transfer innovative technologies from the labs to the private sector to help spur innovation and create jobs.
Tomorrow, May 2 at 9:15 a.m., Senator Heinrich will participate in a briefing with local officials from the City of Farmington, San Juan County and the regional Bureau of Land Management (BLM) office to discuss the community’s Outdoor Recreation Industry Initiative and highlight opportunities to diversify the area’s economy. Following the briefing, Senator Heinrich will go on an off-road site visit to the BLM’s Glade Recreation Area.
At 11:30 a.m., Senator Heinrich will visit the Northwest New Mexico First Born Program, a home visiting program for first time parents to build healthy family relationships through development of parenting skills and goal setting. Senator Heinrich will meet with local families who participate in the program and highlight the importance of taking a two-generation approach to increase opportunities for families in the state. Last year, Senator Heinrich introduced the bipartisan Two-Generation Economic Empowerment Act to dramatically improve the federal government's approach to ending the multigenerational cycle of poverty in New Mexico and across the country. The legislation will give states, local governments, and tribes more flexibility to create partnerships that invest in families living in poverty.
