Heinrich In Las Cruces To Commemorate Veterans Day, Meet With Students At NMSU College Assistance Migrant Program

LAS CRUCES, N.M. –  On Friday, November 10, 2017 and Saturday, November 11, 2017, U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) will be in Las Cruces to meet with students at New Mexico State University’s College Assistance Migrant Program and walk in the Las Cruces Veteran’s Day Parade.

On Friday, November 10 at 4 p.m., Senator Heinrich will participate in New Mexico State University’s College Assistance Migrant Program (NMSU CAMP) annual scholarship night and will meet with NMSU CAMP leadership and students to discuss the positive impact that the program has made in their academic lives. CAMP is a federally-funded program designed to help migrant or seasonal farm workers and their families attend college. The U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Migrant Education recently awarded NMSU’s CAMP program a five-year grant totaling $2.1 million in order for the program to continue offering students the resources and support they need to succeed during their first year of college.

On Saturday, November 11 at 11 a.m., Senator Heinrich will walk in the Las Cruces Veterans Day Parade with fourth- and fifth-graders from Central Elementary School to honor our nation's fallen heroes, veterans, and military families. The Veterans Day Parade is organized by the City of Las Cruces and the New Mexico Army National Guard and has been put on by volunteers since 1995 in support of local veterans. Senator Heinrich is committed to ensuring our nation keeps its promises to our men and women in uniform and their families. He's led the effort to reduce the disability claims backlog, collaborating with U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to work with Community-Based Outpatient Clinics across New Mexico to ensure their needs continue to be met. Senator Heinrich voted to create the Veterans Choice Program in 2014, which allows veterans to utilize other medical facilities if timely VA care isn't available and cosponsored the Veteran’s Affairs Choice and Quality Employment Act, which was signed into law in August to provide $2.1 billion to continue funding and improve the Veterans Choice Program. Senator Heinrich also recently cosponsored legislation that was signed into law to modernize and strengthen veterans’ education benefits and enhance the post-9/11 G.I. Bill.
